Background-

A new business hub designed to support startups has been completed in Workington, Cumbria, and is set to open in the summer. The Innovation Centre aims to strengthen the local business environment and attract new enterprises to the town.

The project was developed under the £23.1 million government-backed Town Deal programme. Cumberland Council led the development and said the centre will provide modern office space in Workington, where such facilities are currently limited.

The building stands on the site of the former Central Car Park in the town centre. The council said the location was chosen to support economic activity and improve access to transport links.

Oxford Innovation Space will manage the centre. The company will support startups and small businesses by offering workspace, business guidance, and access to a wider network of innovation centres across the country.

The managing director of Oxford Innovation Space said businesses will receive tailored support, strong local partnerships, and access to national networks. She added that the focus will be on digital technology and advanced manufacturing companies.

Cumberland Council highlighted its sustainability efforts, stating that almost all construction waste was diverted from landfill and all machinery used cleaner fuel alternatives during the building process.

Council leadership said the Innovation Centre will support the growth of Cumbria’s business community, increase activity in the town centre, and make better use of Workington’s transport links.
