Background:
Wales will get a big economic boost, with £16 billion in investments creating over 10,000 jobs, the Welsh Government said at the Wales Investment Summit in Newport. The summit, hosted at ICC Wales, brought together delegates from 27 countries, including investors, real estate firms, and pension funds, many of whom are new to the Welsh market.
Of the 10,000 jobs, around 5,000 are linked to a £10 billion data centre project by US-based Vantage Data Centers. The company will transform the former Ford engine plant in Bridgend into a major AI-focused data campus, while creating approximately 500 permanent roles on site. Other high-profile projects include Vodafone’s £600 million investment to expand 5G coverage to 99% of Wales and GE Aerospace’s £18 million upgrade of its Nantgarw engine testing facility, which employs 1,350 engineers.
Energy and infrastructure investments are also significant. RWE is investing £200 million in a large-scale battery energy storage facility in Pembroke, helping stabilise the UK energy grid, while Eni is committing £100 million to carbon capture and storage at Flintshire’s Point of Ayr, generating more than 1,000 jobs. Meanwhile, Cardiff-based production company Bad Wolf plans £2 million in TV productions, creating 300 freelance roles.
The summit also highlighted future investment opportunities, including the Welsh Government’s £400 million Global Centre of Rail Excellence in the Dulais Valley and property projects in Swansea, Llanelli, and Cardiff. The event gives companies a chance to work together and allows investors to connect directly with projects in Wales
The Welsh First Minister said that the new investments show strong confidence in Wales and highlighted the country’s skilled workforce, innovation, and focus on green projects, encouraging more companies to invest and create jobs.
The summit, attended by the Prince of Wales, underscores Wales’ growing profile as a hub for technology, energy, and infrastructure investment.
