Background
Volkswagen Group has extended its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for another five years to further develop its Digital Production Platform (DPP), a cloud-based system designed to transform manufacturing operations across its global plants.
The DPP is a digital connectivity throughout the supply chain of Volkswagen that links order intake, logistics, and production. It is already in use in 43 Volkswagen facilities in South America, Europe, and North America. The platform provides a more streamlined data flow and enables the company to standardise IT deployments across factories and enhance cost-efficiency, and minimize delays.
The most important focus of the Volkswagen strategy is artificial intelligence (AI). The company operates over 1,200 AI applications to conduct quality checks, predictive maintenance, and software support. Using AWS Amazon SageMaker, Volkswagen is training artificial intelligence and building agricultural computer vision systems to enhance the quality of its products and save costs.
The renewed collaboration also helps Volkswagen in its transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs), in which the majority of features of a vehicle are controlled and updated through software. The DPP is going to permit the introduction of software updates at the production stage, which will simplify and accelerate the process of the launch of new models.
The future of Volkswagen in terms of its electronics architecture is likely to be formed due to the joint venture with Rivian Automotive and cooperation with Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng. These new systems will incorporate AI solutions like KI4UPS that enable quicker development and flexibility in production.
AWS claimed the collaboration integrates its cloud, Internet of Things, and machine learning solutions with Volkswagen’s manufacturing experience. Kathrin Renz, the Vice President of AWS industries, noted that the collaboration is accelerating AI solutions as a way of bringing an element of innovation to the operations of the Volkswagen Group.
With this extension, Volkswagen is betting on cloud technology and AI to create smarter, more efficient factories and prepare its production lines for the next generation of vehicles.
