Key Background

Back in 2025 the Open Championship is hosted in Northern Ireland’s Royal Portrush for the 153rd time. The scenic links course with its breathtakings views over the sea and challenging conditions hosted The Open for the final time in 1951 and 2019. The course has again been extended to 7,381 yards but retains some of its character-prolonging quirks like the iconic par‑3 16th, Calamity Corner.

There are 156 to battle for the Claret Jug against cheque-winners and world stars. Northern Ireland’s home boy Rory McIlroy is back on the heels of a Masters victory and will refer to his second Open as a benchmark. He will be accompanied by world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, title defender Xander Schauffele, and U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun. It is also supported by some of the LIV Golf League legends such as Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau. Tiger Woods will not be among them, though, as he is recuperating from a surgery.

The championship is a global view. NBC and Peacock will be reporting widely in the USA. Sky Sports Golf will be providing live UK coverage, and the BBC will be featuring. R&A TV features free television coverage globally, and Spidercam coverage of all 18 holes provides cinema-quality bird’s eye perspective of end-round drama. Par-3 channel and four featured group feeds are digitally provided.

With its $3.1 million prize fund and global spotlight on one of the world’s finest layouts, the “Open Championship 2025” will be a feast. On shifting wind and silky rough on the world’s best players, the world will introduce Royal Portrush to a summer of history, drama, and glory.
