Background

Notion announced its first AI agent at the “Make with Notion” event on Thursday, expanding its productivity tools with automation features designed to handle more advanced tasks. The new one is an extension of the current Notion AI tool, yet it goes a step further by handling multi-step processes.

The AI agent can create or update pages and databases in Notion, as well as integrate with other platforms such as Slack, email, and Google Drive. For example, the user can request it to generate a bug tracking dashboard or assemble reports on competitor evaluation based on multiple sources.

Unlike the earlier version of Notion AI, which could only summarize or search through content, the new agent can perform tasks that take up to 20 minutes and involve hundreds of pages. Users can also create a dedicated “profile” page for the agent, which acts as a guide for referencing sources, formatting outputs, and storing important instructions. These memories can be updated or edited at any time.

During demo sessions, the company demonstrated how agents can prepare competition analysis reports, provide feedback on landing pages, and create restaurant trackers. At the moment, these tasks are to be activated manually. However, Notion stated that automatic scheduling and customizable triggers will be introduced in future releases. A template library will also be introduced to help users get started with ready-made workflows.

Notion’s expansion comes after recent launches of a calendar app, Gmail client, meeting note-taker, and enterprise search. These features have enabled the company to establish a solid foundation to facilitate automation to join a competitive sphere, along with platforms as Salesforce, Fireflies, and Read AI.
