Background:
Budapest-based 4iG Space and Defence (4iG SDT) will invest $100 million in U.S. space company Axiom Space, a first for Hungary’s space industry.
Axiom Space, working with Kepler Communications and Skyloom on the ODC, had originally planned to launch the first two nodes to low Earth orbit (LEO) by the end of 2025. However, the company later revised the timeline, targeting an early 2026 launch.
On 19 December, 4iG confirmed the completion of a definitive investment agreement with Axiom Space. According to the terms, 4iG will invest $30 million by 21 December, with the remaining $70 million scheduled for investment by 31 March 2026.
Gellért Jászai, chairman of the board at 4iG, described the collaboration as a “historic step for the Hungarian space industry,” emphasizing that this is the first time a Hungarian company has become a shareholder in a U.S. space firm. He added that Axiom Space’s technological innovations are “transforming the commercial space sector and shaping future developments.”
The December announcement focused less on specific projects than earlier communications but highlighted that the investment will allow 4iG SDT to play a key role in the global space research ecosystem. The company will now have the opportunity to contribute to the development of commercial space infrastructure in LEO and participate in emerging space technologies.
This investment puts 4iG SDT at the center of Hungary’s growing role in the global space industry and builds a stronger connection with a leading U.S. space company. It is an important business move and a milestone for Hungary’s involvement in commercial space projects.
