The new facility will serve as Chery’s European base for research, engineering, and commercial operations. It will support the company’s well-known brands, including Omoda and Jaecoo, as well as the launch of Chery’s eponymous brand in the UK, which has already been promoted with a campaign featuring former England footballer Peter Crouch.

Chery’s decision to base its European operations in Liverpool has been welcomed by local authorities. Liam Robinson, leader of Liverpool City Council, described the investment as “a major vote of confidence in our city’s capabilities, our workforce, and our long-term vision for clean, inclusive growth.”

Industry observers note that the move could pave the way for collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer. The government has reportedly been exploring plans for JLR to build Chery electric vehicles domestically, with discussions expected to have been part of recent talks during UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing. While no formal deal has been announced, experts suggest that JLR’s Halewood factory could potentially provide spare capacity for Chery vehicle production.

Victor Zhang, Chery UK director, has said the company is “actively considering” establishing a manufacturing presence in the UK as part of its localisation strategy. Gong Yueqiong, general manager of Chery Commercial Vehicle, emphasized that the company aims to be “not just bringing products to the UK – we are building a British business.” She added that Chery intends to collaborate with local talent and institutions to adapt products to the UK market’s needs, underlining a commitment to green technology and sustainable growth.

The announcement highlights Liverpool as an emerging centre for automotive research and manufacturing, alongside major local facilities from Ford and Stellantis. Chery’s investment is a boost for the UK car industry, showing the strength of its workforce and readiness for international business.
